Community Counseling Center

Opiates are the hardest addictive drugs to "kick" for good. Opiates not only include heroin, but also common pain medications such as morphine, codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and meperidine. Addiction happens quickly - ending it is much harder. Chronic users can experience intense cravings for the drug even years after last use.

 J.K. Miller Recovery Program

The J.K. Miller Recovery Program is one of only two opiod addiction treatment programs in Southern Illinois.

Services include counseling, in individual, group or family sessions, to address addiction and other life issues. Methadone maintenance is supervised by a physician to provide medical stability and to address the cravings and withdrawal issues of addiction to opiates.

Risk reduction is a cornerstone of the program. By providing counseling and methadone maintenance, consumers are:

  • Less likely to participate in behaviors associated with addiction that are harmful to themselves and society.
  • More likely to engage in a recovering lifestyle that includes keeping a job, being a responsible spouse or parent, and no involvement with law enforcement.

Larry's Story

I was born in the city of St. Louis. My dad drank a lot and mom gave me all the love and security that a little boy needed. When I was 11, we moved to the country.

About a year after we moved my mom got cancer and died. That was the beginning of my downfall. I started taking the painkillers that she left behind. Before I knew it, I was hooked on any drug I could get. I had let those drugs take her place. I would not listen to anyone. Because nothing could take my mom's place, I took more and more and more.

I got married at 16 and even learned to be a truck mechanic. All the while I used all the drugs I could get.

As time went on I started getting arrested. Eventually, I lost it all, including my wife of 17 years. I was sick and dying and on my way to losing my freedom when I learned about Community Counseling Center.

They taught me how to use the tools I already have inside to perform preventive maintenance and remain drug free. I feel more alive than I have been since I was 11. I am now 44.
